Independent Police Complaints Commission Consider Violence at Newcastle Central Train Station
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has confirmed that Northumbria Police referred an incident of violence between supporters of Newcastle United FC and Sunderland AFC to the Commission for consideration due to allegations that the police had instigated the violence.
Several members of the public were injured during the incident at Newcastle Central train station on 11 August 2009 and an independent assessment of the evidence, including CCTV evidence, was made before the Commission decided that it was appropriate for Northumbria Police to investigate the disturbance.
The IPCC is the body responsible for managing and investigating complaints against the police in England and Wales.
If a complaint is made about a police officer, the complaint may be investigated by an officer from the same police force. Certain, very serious cases, must always be referred to the IPCC, including where somebody has died or been seriously injured as a result of contact with the police, seriously assaulted by a police officer or there is an accusation of corruption within a police force. The IPCC can decide to investigate itself, or be responsible for an investigation by managing or supervising an investigation which is carried out by police officers.
If you feel dissatisfied with the way that you have been treated by a police officer or a member of police support staff, you may have grounds to make a complaint. You may have come into contact with the police as a victim of crime, in a crowd control situation, during a protest, during a search or when you or someone you know were arrested.
You might simply want an explanation about why you were treated in a particular way or why the police have not investigated something that you reported. You might be concerned to ensure that the police do not behave badly towards somebody else in the future and for a police officer to face disciplinary proceeding.
We can advise you about whether you have grounds to make a complaint or bring a civil action against the police for compensation. We can help you to make your complaint and advise you about making an appeal should you not be satisfied with the outcome of your complaint.
You can find out more about the IPCC at the website www.ipcc.gov.uk.
