Lisa qualified as a solicitor in March 2000, initially working for a leading civil litigation practice in London before relocating to the North East. Since joining David Gray Solicitors in September 2000, Lisa has specialised in cases concerning actions against the police and police complaints, compensation claims for victims of unlawful detention/miscarriages of justice and personal injury cases
Lisa has successfully won damages for clients bringing actions against the police involving unlawful arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, negligence, assault, trespass, harassment and claims involving Human Rights issues. Lisa has advised on police misconduct matters and has substantial experience of the police complaints system. She has persuaded the IPCC to reverse decisions made by local police forces to ensure officers are disciplined for misconduct issues which have included sanctions ranging from fines to superintendents warnings.
In addition to the police, Lisa also litigates against other public authorities including the prison and immigration services. She has successfully achieved compensation on behalf of clients in discrimination cases following submissions made to the European Court of Human Rights.
In 2004, Lisa was accredited by the Legal Services Commission as a supervisor in the area of Actions Against the Police.
Within the area of personal injury law, Lisa has expertise involving accidents at work, road traffic accidents, fatal accidents, slips and trips and criminal injuries applications. She has advised on claims arising from child abuse and acted on one of the leading cases in the Bryn Alyn litigation in which the Court of Appeal provided guidelines on the application of ss.14 and 33 Limitation Act 1980 to claims arising out of physical and sexual abuse in children’s homes.
Lisa read Law at Northumbria University. She has obtained Postgraduate Certificates in Human Rights and Criminal Injustice awarded by the University of Bristol.
Lisa is committed to pro bono work and has provided voluntary legal support to Plumstead Law Centre, Newcastle Citizens Advice Bureau and whilst on sabbatical, to the largest law centre in South Africa.
