Between 11 and 17 May 2015 The Mental Health Foundation will be celebrating its 15th Annual Mental Health Awareness Week. Since its inception in 2000, Mental Health Awareness week has generated public debate by focussing each year on how our mental health can be affected and improved. Past subjects include anxiety, sleep and exercise.
This year Mental Health Awareness Week shines a light on mindfulness, how it can be used and why it is beneficial to our mental and physical health.
Mindfulness is described by the Mental Health Foundation as “paying attention to the present moment, without becoming stuck in the past or worrying about the future”. Mindfulness focusses on helping people observe the way they think and feel about their experiences. Mindfulness has been a successful tool in helping people deal with a range of mental health problems including stress, anxiety and depression.
This year the Mental Health Foundation is campaigning to make mindfulness practice available in prisons, schools and in the workplace and have arranged a number of activities across the country.
