During major football tournaments such as the World Cup, there is generally a rise in Domestic Abuse incidents.

Correlation between football and domestic violence

The risk of domestic abuse rises during major football tournaments such as the World Cup, with fans behaviour deteriorating due to the high level of emotion involved and an increase in alcohol consumption. Research on the correlation between the football World Cup and domestic abuse rates revealed that domestic violence increased by 38% when England lost, 28% when England won, but also 11% the next day, win or lose.

Types of domestic violence

Domestic violence can occur in different forms:

  • Coercive control – a number of acts or a single action to control the actions of a person. This may be by way of threats or intimidation
  • Psychological or emotional abuse – a way of control by use of emotion to manipulate, embarrass or blame a person
  • Physical abuse – where a person uses their body in order to inflict intentional harm or injury upon another person
  • Sexual abuse – forced sexual acts with or upon a person
  • Financial or economic abuse – a method of control to restrict or manipulate the financial status of a person
  • Online or digital abuse – using technology to harass, bully, stalk or intimidate a person

It is important to be aware if you have experienced domestic abuse, the first step to protect yourself is to contact the police. You can also apply to the Family Court for injunction orders against perpetrators which will prohibit the named person from doing something.
