Lasting Powers of Attorney – fixing the roof while the sun shines!
For many of us this is a time of year to look to the future and make plans – our thoughts often turn to booking a summer holiday, decorating the house, taking more exercise and getting fit. But how many of us think about what’s in store longer term?
With the incidence of dementia and related conditions on the increase, it is worth giving some thought to writing a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). Having an LPA is a way of planning for the future in case you become unable to manage your own finances and other key decisions, for example about your health care. The LPA allows you to appoint someone you trust to take care of your affairs on your behalf. However, you can only make an LPA whilst you still have mental capacity. If you wait until you become ill, then your trusted family or friend may have to make an application to the court to be able to deal with your finances – a stressful, costly and time consuming process. It is the old maxim of “fixing the roof while the sun shines”. If you make plans now and put an LPA in place in will make it a lot easier for your family should the worst happen.
