You can be forgiven for thinking that The Legal 500 is a pat-on-the-back for the legal profession, but it’s far from it. Whilst it is an honour for those who are listed, the guide is ultimately a tool for the consumers of legal services. Research shows we are bombarded with 3000 messages a day and this is increasing due to the accessibility of information through our electronic devices. Rather than simply believing what we are told we now seek proof of the information.

Here at David Gray Solicitors LLP we pride ourselves on excellent customer service and this is reflected in our client reviews, our high repeat and retained client figures as well as external independent validation. One of the UK’s leading independent legal publications in providing this validation is ‘The Legal 500’ who, last week, announced the latest rankings.  The guide is prepared by a team of researchers who scrutinise detailed submissions of work undertaken by the firm and interview clients to gain an understanding of the service and quality of work being carried out.  The Legal 500 is the leading guide to law firms in the UK and provides consumers with the information to make informed choices.

Once again we have been ranked as a Top Tier firm in the North of the UK in Crime (fraud), Crime (general) and Family Law. We have also secured a Second Tier ranking position for our Employment/Immigration and Real Estate (Social Housing) work. In an increase from last year, a total 11 of our solicitors are recommended experts in their legal field; two of them – Managing Partner, Elspeth Thomson and Partner, Mary Shaw – continue to be singled out as national ‘leading individuals’ in family law. Below are some extracts from the recommendations.

Family – “A highly professional firm that attracts considerable praise for its ‘outstanding level of efficient and effective service’.” Recommended team members include: Elspeth Thomson, Mary Shaw, Lucy Mead, Lesley Monkhouse and Nicky Hunter.

Crime – 3 of the team are recommended, including Brian Hegarty, Janice Hall and Jonathan Cousins. It’s recognised that the team “specialises in white-collar crime and large-scale fraud” with Higher Court advocates Brian Hegarty and Jonathan Cousins, noted for their “experience in handling inquests and controversial deaths.”

Employment/Immigration – offering clients a “knowledgeable and friendly service”, the team are led by Bryony Rest who is praised for her “superior level of reasoning and appropriateness of advice.”
