We are looking for a committed and capable criminal defence solicitor to join our Crime Department. This position offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the delivery of high‑quality legal services within a firm dedicated to legal aid, access to justice, and the provision of professional and effective representation.

About the Role

The successful candidate will undertake a diverse caseload of criminal matters. The role includes providing representation at the police station and undertaking court work.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated solicitor who wants to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment within a supportive team.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Providing clear, accurate and timely advice, assistance, and representation to clients across a broad spectrum of criminal matters.
  • Managing a busy and fast‑moving caseload while maintaining excellent client care and meeting key deadlines.
  • Ensure full compliance with regulatory and contractual obligations, including those set by the Legal Aid Agency and the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
  • Accurately recording time, progressing matters efficiently, and meeting agreed billing/performance targets.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the department, offering support and contributing to a positive team culture.
  • Keeping your legal knowledge up to date, participating in supervision, and maintaining relevant accreditations.

Person Specification

  • A qualified solicitor with experience in criminal law; Duty Solicitor accreditation is desirable but not essential.
  • A demonstrable commitment to publicly funded work and to ensuring equitable access to justice for all clients.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake police station advice work, including participation in the duty rota once accredited.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and advocacy skills.
  • Strong organisational capabilities with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively in a high‑pressure environment.
  • A professional and supportive approach to teamwork, combined with the ability to work independently when required.
  • A proactive attitude towards compliance, risk management and continuous improvement.

Why Join Us?

  • The chance to make a real difference to people’s lives through access to justice.
  • A varied, engaging caseload where no two days are the same.

We offer:

  • A values‑driven culture grounded in fairness, respect, and a genuine commitment to serving our community.
  • A strong focus on wellbeing, recognising the demands of criminal practice and ensuring staff feel supported and able to thrive.
  • Flexible working arrangements where possible, helping you balance professional responsibilities with personal commitments.
  • Clear pathways for progression, with opportunities to take on additional responsibility, pursue accreditation, and develop areas of specialism.
  • Structured supervision and mentoring, ensuring you are supported at every stage of your career.
  • Investment in professional development, training and support for continued accreditation and panel membership.
  • A collaborative and inclusive working environment, where colleagues at all levels work together with openness and mutual respect.
  • Modern systems and technology, enabling efficient file management and effective remote working where appropriate.
  • A reputation for excellence within the region, offering you the opportunity to develop your practice within a respected and well‑established firm.
