I am a partner within the firm and head the criminal law and motoring teams at David Gray Solicitors LLP.

I practice in all matters related to criminal defence law from police station representation through to representing clients at magistrates’ and Crown Courts. I am also a higher court advocate representing defendants in the crown court and court of appeal.

I specialise in representing people in court and under investigation for serious matters. I can provide advice and representation throughout your case – and we provide a seamless service ensuring that you receive the best advice as early as possible.

I am known for winning difficult cases. I have represented defendants facing serious charges including murder, rape, sexual offences, extensive drug importations and supply, violent crime, white-collar crime, proceeds of crime and regulatory crime.

The crown court can be intimidating for any defendant. I will ensure you understand every stage of the proceedings. I will assist you in making difficult decisions and ensure you are listened to.

If you are considering an appeal against conviction or sentence, I can provide you with advice and representation.  The appeal process can be complex and I will guide you through and fully consider the merits of your case. If you are serving a prison sentence I can also work with family members – if requested to – and keep everyone informed.

I have considerable experience of providing representation before inquests. If you have an interest in a case that has been referred to the coroner or an inquest is likely, please contact me for further advice.

I have been involved in a wide variety of cases including, gangland murder, murder of children and murder by children. I have conducted a number of drug importation cases, supply cases, organised football violence cases, environmental prosecutions and applications under the proceeds of crime act.

I have also appeared in a number of inquests, including; death in a care home, death in police custody and death of a motorcyclist following a police chase, as well as acting on behalf of families following the death of a relative in prison.

I have specialised in criminal law since 1995 and am a qualified duty solicitor, member of the Criminal Litigation Accreditation Scheme and a supervisor.

I have been given top ranking in the Legal 500 directory for a number of years. It states:  “Brian Hegarty embodies the quality that flows throughout the firm and is applauded for his ability to demonstrate flair in serious criminal matters”

Chambers and Partners Guide to the Legal Profession writes: “enthusiastic sources describe him as a ‘diligent and thorough practitioner who runs the practice very well.”

Brian is regularly asked to comment on Crime related issues on TV and radio:
