  • Just a short note to say how much I appreciated you kind letter, following the Tribunal, which left me feeling very low. Your support, understanding, and professionalism made the nightmare of being in that 'institution' and that situation bearable.

I am writing to say thank you so much for helping my daughter to obtain a discharge from her Section 2 of the Mental Health Act. I know it gave her great strength and hope at a time in her life when everything was extremely stressful and traumatic for her. Thank you once again for all your help.

Just a note to sincerely thank you for yesterday. Without you I am sure my mother-in-law would still be subject to the Section.

I can’t thank you enough for representing me at the Tribunal Hearing. Without that positive outcome I feel certain I could still be back in … lacking any impetus for change or renewal. I too enjoyed our meetings and remain optimistic that we shall not meet in relation to such circumstances again.

I am a member of both the Law Society’s Mental Health Tribunal panel, the Mental Health Lawyers Association and a standing committee member of the Newcastle upon Tyne Law Society .

I am listed as one of only three Mental Health Star Individuals in the National independent Chambers listings and was described as “one of the leading practitioners in (my) field”.

In 2013, I was Newcastle Law Society Lawyer of the Year.

In 2012 I won the national award of Mental Health Lawyer of the Year. I have experience in all areas of mental health law with a particular interest in forensic cases – that is, involving the criminal justice system and the Mental Health Act.

I have experience representing adolescents, adults, elderly people and ‘nearest relatives’.

I attend mental health tribunal hearings. hospital managers hearings and care programme approach (CPA) reviews.  I represent clients at hearings that include:

I travel throughout the North East and Cumbria to represent my clients in hospital, care homes and, if appropriate, in their own homes in the community.

I provide an understanding and empathetic approach to helping clients with their mental health needs, whether in hospital or in the community.  I have a client centered approach and take clients points of view very seriously at a time that can be very distressing and frightening.

I am committed to providing a quality service in this demanding area of law where clients are in a highly vulnerable situation.

I studied law at the University of Kent at Canterbury, qualifying as a solicitor in 1989.  I completed a Master’s Degree in Law at Northumbria University in 1993.

Head of David Gray Solicitors’ mental health team Mike Bishop is widely recognised as one of the leading practitioners in this field. He is committed to representing hospital-detained patients and other individuals, including nearest relatives, in complex tribunals and reviews. One source notes:

“There is a lot of understanding there. Mike knows the best way forward and always tries to be honest about the situation to the client. He is realistic and understands the system so doesn’t set the clients up for failure. He has a very good manner and always rises to the occasion.”
